Sam Rockwell brings experience to new role

Sam Rockwell considers himself the perfect choice to play a womanising scam artist in new movie CHOKE - because he boasts a seedy past himself. The single actor plays Vincent Mancini in the movie adaptation of Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk’s novel of the same name. Mancini visits sex addiction groups to pick up women and makes money by pretending to choke in restaurants, and then conning the good samaritans who ’save’ him out of money.

Rockwell reveals he researched the role by visiting therapy sessions - but was able to draw on some of his own experiences. He tells the New York Post, “Yeah, I went to a few sex addiction meetings. (But) I’ve had my own history - I’ve been to prostitutes and massage parlours and stuff. Back in the old days. So I understand the mindset a little.”

‘Frost/Nixon’ trailer!

I have very exciting news to report! The trailer of Sam’s upcoming film, Frost/Nixon, is finally online! There’s even a plus for German speaking fans, as the trailer is subtitled. Sam appears in quite a few scenes, and seems to have given a great performance, as usual. Click play below to watch it in High Defintion:

The film, based on a series of interviews conducted by the British reporter David Frost with the former US President Richard Nixon, was directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind). It stars Michael Sheen and Frank Langella, who used to play these characters on stage on the Peter Morgan (The Queen) play. Morgan also wrote the screenplay for Universal Pictures. The supporting cast includes Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, Kate Jennings Grant and Sam, of course!

Frost/Nixon hits selected theaters on December 5.

‘Choke’ Soundtrack - The real deal

So much has been said over the past week about the soundtrack of Sam’s upcoming film Choke, based on a novel by acclaimed author Chuck Palahniuk. Apparently, Palahniuk had said the British band Radiohead had done the whole soundtrack for the film, which was denied by the band - they had only contributed with one song, from their latest album, In Rainbows.

Now, to put an end to the whole misunderstanding, here’s the complete tracklist:

Ben Kweller - ‘The Rules’
The Natural History - ‘Don’t You Ever’
Fiery Furnaces - ‘Navy Nurse’
Radiohead - ‘Reckoner’
Alap Momin - ‘Sin Terror’
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - ‘Satan Said Dance’
Buzzcocks - ‘Orgasm Addict’
Death Cab For Cutie - ‘No Sunlight’
Blitzen Trapper - ‘Wicked’
Ms. Tyree Sugar Jones - ‘If You Feel It’
My Morning Jacket - ‘Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt 1?
Shout Out Louds - ‘Bicycle’
Twilight Singers - ‘There’s Been An Accident’
Nicole Atkins - ‘Crystal Ship’

Choke hits theaters on September 26.

Radiohead deny film score claim

Radiohead have denied reports that they have written the soundtrack to a new film from the writer of Fight Club.

Chuck Palahniuk, whose 2001 book Choke has been adapted for the big screen, told BBC 6 Music that Radiohead had written the score.

But spokesperson for the band said they had only contributed a song to the film - In Rainbows track Reckoner - to run over the final credits.

Choke, starring Sam Rockwell, is due to open later this year.

‘Gentlemen Broncos’ Begins Its Viral Campaign

Gentlemen Broncos, one of Sam’s upcoming films, won’t open until next year, but its viral marketing campaign has already begun - that is, using the media and the internet to promote the movie through several strategies. Their first move was to open Dr. Ronald Chevalier’s official website, with a lot of goodies and cool stuff featuring the character of the movie, played by Jemaine Clement. The movie is currently in post-production.

Radiohead score Palahniuk film adaptation

As some critics pointed out, the soundtrack of Choke, Sam’s latest film, wasn’t exactly perfect. Fortunately, director Clark Gregg teamed up with one of today’s most acclaimed bands, Radiohead, to improve the score of the film. Here are some more details about the collaboration.

Radiohead have returned to the studio. The band has written the score for Choke, an upcoming film based on Chuck Palahniuk’s novel. The movie - and presumably its ambient soundtrack - is scheduled for a September 26 release in North America.

“[Director] Clark Gregg knew that I’d written Choke while listening to Pablo Honey, with Creep, over and over and over,” Palahniuk said to BBC 6 Music this week. “So Clark got Radiohead to contribute a song; to write a song for the very end of the movie, the final credits.”

When the band finally saw the film, they “liked [it] so much,” Palahniuk explained, that “they’ve written the score, most of the ambient music throughout it. So it’s Choke - with the music of Radiohead.”

The Oscar Minor Winners

There’s a great new article by Mike Scott on this website that I’d like to mention. It’s basically about the good films released early in the year and that are most likely to be forgotten when awards season comes. That will most likely be the case for Sam’s critically acclaimed performance in David Gordon Green’s Snow Angels, which was released on 7 March and had very modest box office numbers. Therefore, Mike enlists the nominees for his make-believe Oscar Minors award. For him, Sam is the winner in the Best Actor category. Take a look:

The nominees: Chris Cooper, “Married Life”; Chiwetel Ejiofor, “Redbelt”; Richard Jenkins, “The Visitor”; Sam Rockwell, “Snow Angels”; Freddie Highmore, “The Spiderwick Chronicles.”

Any of these actors could see his name stick around for Oscar season, as each gave a fine performance, but in good-but-not-great films. Of them, Highmore would seem to have the slightest chance, but his role in “Spiderwick” — his two roles, to be precise, as he played two very different twins — shouldn’t be ignored just because it was in a “kids’ movie.”

And the Oscar Minor winner is: Sam Rockwell. The guy was devastatingly good in director David Gordon Green’s heartbreaking drama. It’s not an easy performance to watch, as anguished as it is, but sometimes the best movies are the ones that make you squirm a little in your seat.

I just had to post this article, as most of Sam’s incredible performances aren’t rewarded with awards - not that it should make any difference to us, fans, or even himself, for that matter. It’s just nice to see journalists and media professionals having Sam enlisted with some of the best performers this year. It’s one of the reasons why we’re his fans in the first place, isn’t it? He’s aways so great at what he does and is definitely one of today’s best actors. This makes me even more proud of being his fan - and I’m sure it makes you too. =)
